Football Beginner FAQ

Question 1

Do I need to know anything about football before joining?

Accepted Answer

No. Stephanie On Sports is specifically designed for beginners. You don't need to know a single rule, position, or term before showing up. That's the whole point.

Question 2

Do we watch the football game on Zoom?

Accepted Answer

No. You watch the game through your own TV or streaming provider — NFL Sunday Ticket, Peacock, ESPN+, or wherever you normally watch. You join Stephanie separately on Zoom for live explanations and questions. Stephanie does not stream or rebroadcast the game.

Question 3

Can I ask basic football questions?

Accepted Answer

Absolutely. The entire point is to create a comfortable place to ask the questions you may have been afraid to ask elsewhere. No question is too basic — Stephanie has heard them all and loves every one.

Question 4

What happens during a watch-along?

Accepted Answer

You turn on the game at home through your own TV or streaming service, then join Stephanie live on Zoom. As the game unfolds, Stephanie explains the plays, penalties, positions, and strategy in real time. You can ask questions at any point — it's relaxed, fun, and completely beginner-friendly.

Question 5

How do I join a session?

Accepted Answer

Head to the Contact page and send Stephanie a message to reserve your spot. She'll send you the Zoom link before the game. It's that simple.

Question 6

What is the basic goal of football?

Accepted Answer

Each team is trying to move the ball into the other team's end zone to score points. The offense (team with the ball) tries to advance down the field, and the defense tries to stop them. Whoever has the most points when time runs out wins.

Question 7

What is a first down?

Accepted Answer

A first down is a fresh set of four chances (called "downs") to move the ball at least 10 yards forward. Every time the offense gains 10 yards, they get a new first down and four more tries. If they can't gain 10 yards in four tries, the other team gets the ball.

Question 8

How long is an NFL game?

Accepted Answer

An NFL game has four 15-minute quarters, so 60 minutes of game time. But with timeouts, penalties, replays, and halftime, a game usually takes about 3 hours from start to finish. The clock stops a lot — especially late in close games.

Question 9

What actually happens on each play?

Accepted Answer

Both teams line up facing each other. When the center snaps (hands) the ball to the quarterback, the play begins. The offense tries to advance the ball — either by running with it or throwing it — while the defense tries to tackle the ball carrier or knock away the pass. The play ends when the ball carrier is tackled, goes out of bounds, or a pass hits the ground incomplete.

Question 10

Is the 5-Day Football Course really free?

Accepted Answer

Yes, completely free. Five short lessons delivered to your inbox over five days, plus a free PDF guide you can keep forever. No credit card, no catch.

Question 11

What if I can't attend a live session?

Accepted Answer

No problem — the free 5-Day Email Course is a great way to learn at your own pace, any time. You can also browse Football 101 articles on the blog for beginner-friendly explanations of rules, positions, and strategy.

Question 12

How many points is a touchdown?

Accepted Answer

A touchdown is worth 6 points. After scoring, the team gets a bonus chance: they can kick the ball through the uprights for 1 extra point (called a PAT or extra point), or try a short play into the end zone for 2 extra points (called a two-point conversion). Most teams kick for the easy 1 point.

Question 13

What is a field goal?

Accepted Answer

A field goal is when the kicker kicks the ball through the tall yellow uprights at the back of the end zone. It's worth 3 points. Teams usually attempt a field goal on 4th down when they're close enough to kick but don't want to risk turning the ball over.

Question 14

What is a safety?

Accepted Answer

A safety is worth 2 points and goes to the defense. It happens when the offense is tackled (or commits a penalty) in their own end zone. It's relatively rare, but it's one of the few ways the defense can score directly.

Question 15

What does offside mean?

Accepted Answer

Offside means a defensive player crossed the line of scrimmage (the invisible line where the ball is placed) before the ball was snapped. It's a 5-yard penalty against the defense. The offense gets to replay the down — so it's a free 5 yards for them.

Question 16

What is holding?

Accepted Answer

Holding is when a player grabs and holds onto an opponent who doesn't have the ball. Offensive holding (grabbing a defender) is a 10-yard penalty. It's one of the most common penalties you'll see called — and one of the most complained about by fans.

Question 17

What is pass interference?

Accepted Answer

Pass interference is when a defender illegally prevents a receiver from catching a catchable pass — usually by grabbing, pushing, or making contact before the ball arrives. It's a spot foul, meaning the offense gets the ball at the spot of the foul, which can be a huge gain.

Question 18

What is a coach's challenge?

Accepted Answer

Coaches can throw a red flag onto the field to challenge a referee's call they think was wrong. The play gets reviewed on video. If the coach is right, the call is reversed and they keep their challenge. If they're wrong, they lose a timeout. Each team gets two challenges per game.

Question 19

What does the quarterback do?

Accepted Answer

The quarterback (QB) is the leader of the offense. They receive the snap from the center, then decide whether to hand the ball to a running back, throw it to a receiver, or run with it themselves. The QB calls the plays and is usually the most important player on the team.

Question 20

What is a wide receiver?

Accepted Answer

Wide receivers (WRs) are the players who run routes down the field and catch passes from the quarterback. They line up on the outside edges of the offense. Speed and hands are their superpowers — their job is to get open and make the catch.

Question 21

What is a linebacker?

Accepted Answer

Linebackers play in the middle of the defense, behind the defensive linemen. They're versatile — they stop running plays, rush the quarterback, and cover receivers. Think of them as the defensive equivalent of an all-around athlete. They're often the most vocal leaders on defense.

Question 22

What is the yellow line I see on TV?

Accepted Answer

That yellow line is the first-down line — it's added digitally by the broadcast and isn't actually on the field. It shows exactly where the offense needs to reach to get a first down. The blue line marks where the ball currently is. These graphics are one of the best inventions in sports broadcasting.

Question 23

What is the red zone?

Accepted Answer

The red zone is the area between the 20-yard line and the end zone. When a team gets into the red zone, they're in scoring range. Defenses get much more intense here because there's less field to work with. Scoring in the red zone is a big deal — teams that do it consistently tend to win.

Question 24

What is the two-minute warning?

Accepted Answer

The two-minute warning is an automatic timeout that happens when there are exactly 2 minutes left in the second quarter (halftime) and the fourth quarter (end of game). It's a built-in TV timeout, but it also gives teams a chance to regroup. The final two minutes of a close game are often the most exciting part.

Question 25

How does overtime work in the NFL?

Accepted Answer

If the game is tied after 4 quarters, each team gets at least one possession in overtime. If the first team scores a touchdown, they win immediately. If they kick a field goal, the other team gets a chance to match or beat it. If it's still tied after both teams have had the ball, the next score wins. In the playoffs, you keep playing until someone scores.

Question 26

Can I send someone else to Stephanie On Sports?

Accepted Answer

Absolutely. Stephanie On Sports is perfect for people learning football for themselves, partners who want to understand the game, friends or family members who want a beginner-friendly teacher, or anyone who wants to quietly learn football and surprise the football fan in their life.
